The Federal Government is set to invest $2.8 billion to upgrade the drone fleet of the Australian Federal Police and the Royal Australian Air Force.
The Federal Government announced the announcement in a statement on Thursday, saying the funds would be used to “add to our drone fleet and support future generations of frontline policing”.
It said the funding would go towards upgrading the Royal Australia Air Force’s A4E aircraft, as well as new aircraft for the Federal Government’s Canberra station.
“These aircraft provide the Royal Air Force with a range of capabilities for responding to emerging threats, including those from the terrorist threat,” the statement said.
The Australian Federal Government and the Federal Police have been in negotiations over the upgrades to the aircraft.
Last month, the Federal Budget announced a $2 billion upgrade of the Canberra station, with an additional $600 million earmarked for upgrades to other parts of the city.
